Series Spotlight With Author Twyla Turner

Scarred SeriesIf you have not read Scarred by Twyla Turner, you better get yo life then go click it up! Sloan Stryker…whooo chile. That name alone makes you wanna drop the draws. When I saw the cover to Scarred, I was immediately sucked in. One, you rarely find a book cover that captures the true essence of who the characters are, and two, it’s a custom painting! This is Sloan Stryker! As you read this story, you will never question what Sloan looks like. The detail is phenomenal right down to the scars on his face. (Big ups to the artist who did these!)

The Damaged Souls series is a trilogy. Book 2, Open Wounds, is dropping May 1 (That would be tomorrow), and it’s available now for pre-order. You will fall in love with Sloan as I have…

Cover Reveal: Something Old by Emeline Piaget

Undeniable Love

Before we get to the cover reveal of Something Old, Something New by Emeline Piaget, let’s take a refresher course: Something Old is a spinoff of Undeniable Love. Wyatt and Stephane were the it couple in that story, but they also had a couple of BFFs who played strong, supporting roles. That would be these folks:

Phil and Syd
Phil and Sydney

If you’ve read Undeniable Love, then you know these two were destined to have their own story because these characters are a trip. So without further ado, I give you the cover to Phil and Syd’s story:

Is this not a gorgeous cover?! It’s so simplistically elegant. I love how the roses pop with subtle color against the black and white backdrop of the piano.

Now I can already see a few of you scratching your heads and are asking yourselves: I thought she only promotes IR/AA Romance? This ain’t IR, and it dang sure ain’t AA…

Well, it definitely isn’t either per se, but the supporting cast are, and there are elements of both infused into this story. Besides Wyatt and Steph making appearances, we have some new characters who play prominently into the storyline.

L-R: Chanel, Colton, and Darby

Something Old is dropping in early May. Make sure you add it (and Undeniable Love) to your TBR!

Another Exclusive Sneak Peek Of S&M IV by Vera Roberts

Warning: This post contains explicit content and is meant for mature audiences 18 years or older, so if you ain’t, then get ta steppin!

Ms. Roberts has blessed us with another hella hot sneak peek.

“Um…” Mariana wanted to press the issue but Scott made the decision for her. “…I wanted to say thank you for the very generous graduation gift. It was completely unexpected.”

“It’s something you’ve always wanted and I thought it would be a nice gift for you,” Scott admired Dove’s nude body before him. She kneeled down and crawled to him, resting her head on his lap and awaited his next instruction. “I’m just glad you enjoyed it.”

Mariana wanted to ask Scott if he actually attended her graduation and where was he hiding, if he did. It was something she was better off not knowing, after all. “I do. It was very nice of you.”

“Was there anything else, Mari?” Scott snapped his fingers and Dove rolled over on her knees. She unbuckled Scott’s pants and pulled out his cock. She began to suck it.

“Um…” Mariana wondered how badly did she want to bring up an old situation that might have been false. If Scott was unfaithful to her, it would’ve been with Caprina. Or maybe. He often traveled without her and gone for days at a time to oversee shoots and meet with other executives. She’d heard about numerous stories about executives having multiple families in different states and her mind went into overdrive.

Still, Mariana had to know. She needed a reason – anything, really – to hate him. “…Did you ever cheat on me?”

“Did I what?” Scott was certain he didn’t hear her correctly. “Cheat on you?”

“One of the women here said you two dated for over a year and I just wanted to verify with the source if that was true.” Mariana replied.

Scott already knew who it was. He made the mistake of sleeping with her after a night of too many shots and a severe case of misjudgment at the CLIO awards. The sex wasn’t half bad but Scott made it a point not to sleep with her again. It was that night he realized even he had hard limits. “Erin?”

Mariana almost choked on her spit. “Um…”

“You don’t have to play coy with me, Mari. I know who you’re referring to.” Scott looked down at Dove sucking his cock. “I’m well aware of what Erin has been saying.”

The cryptic reply didn’t help Mariana at all. If anything, Scott just added onto the rumors. “So it’s not true?” Mariana clarified.

“What difference would it make now?” He asked.

Mariana felt a swell of heartbreak and a curious anger forming within her like a category five storm. Was he messing with her emotions like he strangely used to on occasion when they were together? Or did he tell her in not so many words that the asshole she had come to known and loathed really did step out on her?

She briefly wondered why she even cared if the so-called infidelity happened within the past year. They may not have been together at that point and it bothered her more than it should’ve. “It makes a big difference, yes.”

Mariana pulled the receiver away and wondered if she needed to clear her ears. How in the hell did he just flip back on her? The numerous trashy dramas and reality shows she loved to watch told her it was a defense mechanism and just maybe, he was confirming what Erin had said. “How?” She repeated and thought about why she even bothered entertaining the question.

“I thought you knew our relationship better than that.” His voice was calm as if they were talking about the weather and not a serious accusation. “Furthermore, I thought you knew me better than that.”

“The fact you’re not answering the question tells me yes.” She replied with a twinge of anger and sadness.

“The fact I am questioning why you’re asking me tells you nothing of the sort,” he shot back.

Me after reading this: This muthafucka…

Monday Musings: No More Shhhh…Let’s Talk About The “R” Word

This post has been brewing in my mind and in my heart for a minute, and truthfully, it’s been the reason I’ve decided to change the primary focus of this blog from interracial romance to include both African-American and multicultural romance. The “r” word I wanna briefly touch on is race-the big damn elephant in the room when it comes to not only interracial romance but mainstream romance as well.

More importantly though, I really wanna talk about what I perceive to be the deliberate bashing of black men that I often read about in some of these IR romance novels. I mean these brothas are portrayed as if Satan himself birthed him the way they do these sistas so dirty. Then she meets Mr. White Savior who rides to the rescue to save her from her brutish, black ex. I literally want to SCREAM when I come across stories like this!

Now, don’t get me wrong, I get it-to an extent. The ex has to be a horrible person who has hurt this woman beyond repair, but damn, when I read some of these stories, my immediate question is often, “Who hurt you?” As in you, the author. What kind of message does this send? Or am I personally reading to much into this? Some may think so, but I be feeling some type of way when I read this mess…

The other thing that makes me wanna go into orbit is this colorblind sentiment I often read about. Noooooooooooooooooooooope. I do not subscribe to it, because personally, to tell me when you look at me you do not see color is to deny me of my humanity and all the struggle that black people have endured in this world, but I digress…Now, I understand this may all be a sincere attempt (or even your true philosophy) to be politically correct, but let’s stop pretending not to see race when we’re reading and writing these stories.

Isn’t the fact that this man is white (or non-black) one of the main attractions? Isn’t it the fact that this man’s skin is so vastly different from ours part of the appeal? I’m not saying it’s the only reason the dude is the end all, be all, but c’mon, if his skin tone weren’t a factor, then why is there a whole genre called interracial romance? Instead of “When I see you, I don’t see color?”, can we be like, “Yeah, I’m black, you’re white, I’m feeling your vibe, I acknowledge our differences, and it’s one of the things that I love about us so let’s not trip over it”?  While you may not “see” color, everybody else and they mama sure will…and will remind you of it too!

Also let me state that these are my opinions, and I speak only for myself. I know nothing will change, but I had to talk about it…

Book Review: Declan + Coraline

I haven’t posted a review in some time, and I need to get back to that. So…here we go….

Declan + Coraline (Ruthless People, #0.5)Declan + Coraline by J.J. McAvoy

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is my first ever read by author JJ McAvoy, and I enjoyed it-overall. From what I understand, Declan+Coraline is the prequel to her popular series Irish mafia series Ruthless People. From the way this story reads, it can be considered as a standalone as the other installments in the series focus primarily on Declan’s cousin/brother Liam Callahan.

Declan Callahan and Coraline Wilson are polar opposites in every since of the word. He is a privileged, yet ruthless Irish mobster, while Coraline is a docile black American princess. They do have a few things in common though: They’re both wealthy in their own right (although by very different yet not uncommon means). As young kids, they both lost their parents violently, and they are wildly attracted to one another. The chemistry is off the charts falling off the page crazy good!

Without giving away the entire story, Declan lives by the family code, and it’s simply family first. Bros over hoes. Business before pleasure. Well you know what? Coraline bust all that bull wide open cause she had ol boy SPRUNG from the first time he laid eyes on that ass-literally! Coraline comes off as a little naïve which is understandable given her sheltered upbringing and living with her mooching aunt, uncle, and cousin. She sees the good in everything and everybody, whereas Declan is bow down or lay down. There’s also the cultural factor to contend with. The Callahan’s creed is “we stick to your own”. Will Coraline be accepted not only because she’s not Irish, but also because she’s black? Will the truth of Declan’s lifestyle and family history destroy what he and Coraline are trying to build? Or will she woman up and fight for her man?

This story could have been great if it were fleshed out a little more. The author admittedly wrote this after being pressured by fans to give Declan and Coraline their own story which leads me to believe that they really struck a chord with some in the Liam stories. I just wish it were a little longer and Coraline a little stronger…

Monday Musings: Hypocricize Much?

Yeah, I made that word up because I see a lot of hypocrisy going on amongst romance readers and fans, and I’m like…

Go on wit dat bullshit

Example 1:

“I do not read stories about infidelity. Nope. That man/woman is the scum of the earth.”

On the flip side:

“Ooh, I just love dark romances! I love a troubled man who chokes his woman out, rapes has forced sex with her, then proclaims his love. He had a rough childhood so I forgive him.”

bye felicia

Example 2:

“I don’t write reviews.”

On the flipside:

In all the groups talking bout “Ooh this book was so good” or “This book was terrible. Please don’t waste your money”…

Example 3:

“I don’t read books by new authors because I’ve been burned too many times.”

On the flipside:

Fangirls over sub par book by a veteran author because hey, that’s their fave or…

Complains that there aren’t any good books out…

I know I ain’t the only one who sees mess like this…
