Books I’ve Read This Week

Read I

I’ll be back soon with another video review. I’m trying to improve the quality which will probably mean investing in a camera or a tripod for my Flip. I’ve been using the webcam to make these, and I’m rambling like y’all give a shit, but anyway…

Now that I’m between beta reads, I have some free time on my hands. I cannot believe I’ve actually read 6 books in the last week! I haven’t read 6 books back-to-back in I don’t know how long…All of these are click-worthy reads, and I hope you consider them for future reading. Let’s go!

Big White Lie by Paige Notaro: I love this woman’s stories. They’re complicated tales of racist white men who meet these beautiful, black women who challenge and shatter every filty, disgusting notion they were taught about black people and other races, causing them to alter their perspective and get their damn lives. FabulosityBig White Lie is part of the Storm’s Soldiers MC series. This is book 1 of Calix’s story. Calix is the older brother of Vaughn from the Black and White installment. I hated Calix in Vaughn’s story, and I’m still side-eying him, but Rosa is time enough for him. Also loved that Rosa is Afro-Venezuelan.

Brent Sinatra by Mallory Monroe: Ok, I’ma keep it real. Only click this book if you’re a diehard Mallory Monroe fan. This was probably her most lackluster story to date, and it pains me greatly to even have to say that.Damn, Damn, Damn Brent wit his fine ass got gypped in this one, and she better bring it with the next one. But, being the diehard that I am, I got through it. It didn’t wow me like all her other ones have.

Complicated Love 2 by Lilah K. London: The long-awaited sequel is finally here! She ended book 1 on a major cliffhanger  leaving me and the other fans like10347632_10152620639169748_8186742826701542873_n

Don’t get me wrong. I love cliffhangers, but that one was totally unexpected, and it just ended. But Ms. London came through and wrapped up the story nicely. You definitely must read Book 1 first. They’re both short reads and perfect when you don’t have a lot of time. This is a YA/NA story.

Landon’s Obsession by Sara Hess: New author for me, and she put her foot in this one. Teen/young adult drama at it’s finest. This is not only a love story, but almost more importantly, a story about class and privilege. You just don’t fraternize with the “help” and when one parent is hellbent on breaking up this starstruck couple, all hell breaks loose. Had me like

I just love teen angst and young adult drama….

Perfectly Mixed by Ancelli: After months and months of teasers and will it or won’t it, the book finally dropped! This is the story of two married couples desperate to conceive a child, but y’all know the fertility clinic gon fuck something up, and the mama and daddy ain’t who they’re supposed to be. Now when you read this, you’ll want to grab the biggest damn bowl of popcorn you can find cause you gon be like:

10380762_10204374943350309_267875811176472090_nIn more ways than one…

Wanting You by Danyell A. Wallace: A brand new author on the scene, and this is a good first effort, and it’s another young adult drama which I loooove. Everything goes down over the course of a semester at college, and it’s fast moving and drama-filled! Kellen has a bad ass girlfriend, but when he meets Tamia for the first time:longingPo’ girlfriend lmao…

Thursday Thoughts: To Review Or Not to Review?

Thursday ThoughtsCause I got some shit on my mind…

If you follow this blog and /or my reviews on Goodreads, you may notice a pattern. I only review or talk about books that I really, really like-as in 4 stars and above. There is a reason for this: I don’t like to be critical-even when the book warrants it. It pains me to publicly (negatively) critique an author’s work, so yeah, I’ve stopped doing it. It’s even worse when an author sends me their book and requests a review. I read it, and don’t like it, and they never hear from me again. This is my public apology. I AM SORRY. I’m too chicken to even reach out to you to tell you I didn’t like your book, and for this reason, I’ve decided to no longer accept book review requests. I am, however, available to beta read. I much prefer to do that because it allows me to be as critical as I want before the author hits publish.

So authors, I’m asking you specifically, would you want a critical review of your book posted on Amazon or Goodreads or would you rather the reader just contact you privately to tell you their issues? Or does it even matter? Because I feel like if you post a critical review, you’ll get skewered by the fangirls even if you provide evidence substantiating your critique. So there, I’ve revealed a secret. I’m leaving now…

A three month modelling contract in Paris.
Two strangers drawn together by fate.
A stalker hell-bent on keeping them apart.
Selene Michaels is determined to never let anyone make her feel inferior again. After a painful divorce, she finds herself in Paris on a working holiday, hopeful that this will be the opportunity she has been waiting for. She intends to have fun and maybe find someone to flirt with; someone who will show her a good time, treat her right. What she does not expect to find is Remington St. Germain and his adorable son, Adrien. Remington is intense, devastatingly hot and a Prince Charming on the outside, but a dirty talking, insatiable devil behind closed doors and not the type to give up on something that he wants. Adrien makes her loss almost bearable. Selene soon realizes that life with Remington is not only interesting, but adventurous and dangerous. Someone is eager to keep Remington and her apart, and will go into great lengths to make sure that happens.
Remington is at a crossroads. He can either let Selene go, forget about her. Or pursue her with determination, just like he does everything else. Otherwise he will be right back where he was before she came into his life. The clock is ticking, and danger looms closer. He will do anything to save the woman who is fast becoming a part of his soul.
Sometimes life gives you a second chance. But what happens when danger threatens that chance?

Autumn Grey is the author of the Havoc series (Havoc, Obliterate, Mend). And just like her characters, she is quirky, sometimes funny and definitely flawed. She writes sexy contemporary romances full of drama, steamy kisses and happy ever afters.

Personal Note: Despite what the cover and promo materials reflect, this is an IR (BWWM) romance series. I’ve read it and enjoyed it. I encourage you to give it a shot. Good debut!

SNEAK PEEK: Surviving Harmony:
January 7, 2002
Harmony, NE
Darkness is defined as the absence or
lack of light.
At this very moment, that definition
not only describes my surroundings, it describes me. The fact that I’m still
breathing is the only light in my life that’s left.  Everything else
feels dark. Dead.
I’ve been pulling against the rope so
long, I can no longer feel my wrists. All I feel is the wetness dripping down
my arm. I don’t know if the darkness is due to the time of day or just the fact
that I cannot open my eyes since my face was used as a punching bag by the
monsters keeping me in my own private version of hell.
I lie here shivering on the cold
concrete floor, and no longer count the seconds going by. I no longer pray for
a savior that I know isn’t coming. I simply bask in the nothingness.
I never would have thought that I
would long to feel numb, but after being subjected to so much pain, my brain
has short circuited and now I feel nothing—and feeling nothing is much better
than what I’ve endured for the last two days. Wait . . . has it been two or
three days? I’ve lost concept of time. I’m just happy that the monsters have
gone away and left me in my darkness. Although I doubt it was their intent, to
gift me the quiet. It is a dark paradise I revel in.
We grow up with “stranger danger” drilled
into our heads. We learn to fear the stranger who offers candy to lure us to
some unknown hideout to do despicable things.Strangers will hurt us and
steal us away from our families. Strangers attack ladies who go for
jogs alone. Strangers are monsters who possess the power to hurt us.
But the monster that lured me away
didn’t need candy. The lure was acceptance, love, things I thought my friend
was offering.
That’s the problem with “stranger
danger:” nothing is ever edified about fearing the monsters we know. The
people who live among us, gain our trust and use it against us, doing far worse
than any stranger ever could.
I learned this lesson a little too
I understand God punishing me for my
stupidity. My mother always said I was too trusting. My sister Tangy used the
word innocent. I can accept my fate because maybe I deserve this for being so
naïve, and trusting whatever I’m told. But why, oh why, did she have to follow
me? Now they are teaching us both lessons we will never forget. I just pray we
will get the chance to learn from them. I pray we live through this experience
so history will never be forced to repeat itself. If I am ever able to get out
of this place, trust will only be granted to the deserving, if it’s granted at
all. If I try really hard, maybe I can focus on finding a way out of this hell.
Warm air blows against my skin, and
though I should welcome it, I don’t. Whenever the warm air returns, so do they.
I try to mentally prepare myself for
what’s next. I know I can’t stop whatever they have planned but I can retreat
to that place in my head where I don’t feel much. If I survive this I know one
thing for certain, I will never let my guard down again. I won’t be so trusting
and naïve. I will never leave myself open for another monster to deceive me.

Big Week For New Releases!

FotorCreatedY’all!!!! This week is going to be epic because there is something for EVERYONE!

There are new(ish) authors and veteran authors, sweet romance and tantric loving. A little historical and a lot of contemporary. New love and married love. I am fans of all of these authors. I’ve read one or more, and in a few cases, ALL of their books, and I am so excited for these new releases. So enough blubbering, let’s see what’s dropping this weekend!

Black Rainbow by JJ McAvoy (of Declan+Coraline fame): This looks to be a hot and steamy read! A college student inadvertently hooks up with her college professor. Oh snap!

Loving Kyla by Michelle Hardin: All of you Dangerous Beauty fans will be in for a real treat. This is so not Dangerous Beauty, but Kyla is still a force to be reckoned with. Michelle definitely knows how to capture the spirit of young, upwardly-mobile black women in her narratives.

Maybe Forever by Kim Golden: I think this series (and this author) is so slept on! It’s rare that we read about American black women in love and marriage who live abroad-and are thriving! Please get to know Laney and Mads because they’re one of my all-time favorite couples. Start with book 1, Maybe Baby, then work your way up. Excellent series!

S&M IV by Vera Roberts: You’ve seen the hot snippets I’ve been posting, now the book is finally here! Will Scott & Mariana make it or will he still be public dick #1? I swear that man…

Sadie’s Surrender by Afton Locke: If you’re a fan of the mega popular Plucking the Pearl, then here’s another story in the Oyster Island series for you to enjoy. This one features Sadie, Pearl’s cousin. Bonus: It’s a historical and takes place in my home state of Maryland!

Something Old, Something New by Emeline Piaget: Check out the cover reveal I did a few weeks back. I think you will enjoy this story because Sydney is one of the most relate-able characters I’ve come across in a long time. Read what happens when a dick-whipped woman meets a real gentleman and becomes torn (queue Natalie Imbruglia…)

I’m so excited to have too much to read instead of having nothing to read. Click them up today!
