New Releases By Some Veteran Authors

NR IINow when I say veteran, I don’t mean old! I mean seasoned. Experienced. Wrote more than 3 books. Have a loyal following. Sheesh 😉 Enough blabbering, let’s get to it!

Bennett

Mind Over Matter by Kaia Bennett: Book 3 in the Loose Ends Series. Yes, this is a serial, so reading books 1 & 2 are highly recommended. Will Gabe and Nicole finally stop bullshittin and get together…permanently? Click it up to find out!

Wilson

Fur-Ever Yours by Roxy Wilson: Okay, this is new (literally and figuratively). Roxy usually writes contemporary romance, and this is a paranormal/shifter joint. And the chick is BBW! I know my curiosity is definitely piqued. Click it up! Also available on Kindle Unlimited.

PaceWheels Of Steel (Book 4) by Pepper Pace: Yes, another serial, and yes, I recommend that you read books 1-3 first (which is also available in one convenient volume). This follow up was literally years in the making. I know I’m gonna have to go back and reread book 3 to refresh my memory.

OwBecause I Love Him by Christina Ow: Damn this sounds like some hellafied drama! Dude is engaged to be married. Meets another chick on a business trip, and they knock boots. He calls off the wedding but finds the side chick in bed with his brother. Yoooooooooo!!!

CraftReplacement Queen by Vivienne Craft: Ms. Craft is one of those hidden gem authors. She’s written a few books but is really under the radar but deserves a lil shine. Vegas and fairytale. Yeah, I think this one is worth checking out. Also available on Kindle Unlimited.

PLOT SUMMARY

Lanya gave her love and trust to a man, only to find out their relationship was a lie. Shattered, she decides she’s never giving her heart to anyone again. But when her ex, Mikael LockRidge, offers her a proposition she can’t refuse, Layna finds being with him makes it impossible to resist the sensual pull between them.
Blackmailed to commit an act that still haunts him, Mikael accepts his current loveless relationship as karma. But when he receives unexpected help from the grave, Mikael realizes he wants back what he lost. He just has to convince the ex he hurt to let him back in her life and her heart.

EXCERPT

Layna hurried in, her eyes connecting with Mikael as soon as his apartment door closed behind her.

“I came as soon as I got your message.” Concern etched her face. “What’s wrong? Your message said it was important.”

Layna’s heart rate had skyrocketed when she received the text from Mikael telling her it was an emergency and to come to his apartment as soon as possible.

Expecting to see chaos as soon as she entered, Layna stopped and took a deep breath noticing for the first time that everything looked calm, including the sender of the text.

Something was not right here.

“Mikael, what’s wrong?”

His blue eyes were chilly and his usually messy black hair was styled perfectly giving him a debonair look. She asked as she realized he was dressed in business attire. Mikael’s usual style was rocker meets prep. He left her and other girls drooling when he wore his trademark tight black tee and faded blue jeans. Although the black suit fit his lean, muscular six–foot-plus frame nicely it also made him look cold and detached. She had jokingly referred to it as his LockRidge armor. He only wore his ‘armor’ when he had to deal with his father.

Monday Musing: I Have Been In Reading Hell!!!!

imagesI will usually power through a book no matter how bad it is because a big part of me truly appreciates a writer’s efforts. If they’re brave enough to present their work to the masses, then I should be brave or patient enough to read it to the end, but I SWEAR TO GOD that I have abandoned a record 5 books in the last week because I was so offended not only as a woman, but as a black person by the shit I’ve read. Allow me to share with you:

Black woman tells white man: “I’ve dated black guys, but I’ve never liked how they treated me.”tumblr_mweldce1Nq1qd5txyo6_r1_250Now these words were written by a white, male author, and before you think to yourself, “Hmph, not surprised…” or “Wow”, just know that I have read the same statement in one form or another by black, female authors as well. This angers me on a level that you cannot even begin to comprehend. I could devote an entire blog post to this but maybe another time…Just…NO. Please don’t do this. Do not put down an entire race of men to justify or “introduce” this interracial coupling.

***

White men, usually the hero, using the “N” word freely because he was raised by a black family, or in a black neighborhood, or because he was given a “pass.”IMG_314654687413051I don’t give a gotdamn who this white man is. If he is the love interest of this black woman and he’s spouting the “N” word, and she ain’t checking him, this book is an immediate DNF, and I am side-eying the hell out of the author. To clarify, I am not referring to non-black characters who are openly and admittedly racist in the narrative and that kind of talk is essential to who that character is and the role they play, but those characters who are the love interests of the black heroine.

***

Dumb broads: Just the kind who don’t have a friggin clue. They’re in love with their male BFF, but instead of exploring the possibility of a relationship out of fear of ruining the friendship if the relationship doesn’t work out, she pretends that she doesn’t have feelings for him and for more than 50% of the book, she’s lusting from a distance while he pursues a relationship with someone else or he strings her along until he makes up his mind. I.CAN.NOT.

Girl Bye

This is what I get for clicking new books instead of reading from my already bulging TBR. I was lured and enticed by a hot cover and a tricked out blurb, but it was all smoke and mirrors. I’m sticking to my TBR (yeah, right…)

Long Time Coming: A Review

Long Time Coming (Hot Rods Book 8)Long Time Coming by Jayne Rylon

Rating: 4.5 stars

I love romance stories that feature two “mature” adults. Hell, just cause you over 40 don’t mean you stop getting horny. This is not a book about sex although there are some thoroughly erotic moments sprinkled throughout. This is my first read by author Jayne Rylon, and real talk, dude on the cover had me at first glance: Those rippling muscles, that sexy ass salt-n-pepper hair…

Fuck Yeah!
Although this is book 8 in Rylon’s popular Hot Rods series, it can be read as a standalone. Of course, there is prominent crossover of other characters from the previous books because they’re all related in some way, but I didn’t get lost or felt the need to have to read those books to keep up with this one. Tom London is the leader of the Hot Rods. They’re not an MC club or gang per se, but they are a bunch of gear heads who own and operate this massive garage. Tom is pushing 50, and he’s dedicated his life to raising his biological son as well as all the other guys who’ve become a part of his family. They’re all grown men now, and he’s lonely and got feels for Wilhelmina “Willie” Brown, who happens to be the mother of Amber and Nola who are married or “betrothed” to two of his adoptive sons (They each have their own story in the series as well.) Willie is feeling Tom too, but they both got issues-still living in the past and can’t let go of their dead spouses. Or can they?

I really liked this story because it had substance. You had two grown ups who are trying to make this relationship pop off while dealing with all the outside shit going on, and there’s also a major plot twist which could shake up Tom and Willie’s relationship. Very good story. The only issue I had was like many serials, sometimes the major players get lost in their own story because of all the other characters overlapping and taking up “space”. I wanted more Tom and Willie and less everybody else, but I get it. They were the parents and just can’t quit parenting. At any rate, good story. Click it up!

Monday Musing: Can We Get Some IR Diversity Please?

Diversity I

I know this sounds like an oxymoron, but any fan of the BW IR narrative should know what I’m talking about. No? I’ll spell it out for you: Interracial Romance goes FAR beyond B(lack)W(oman)W(hite)M(an). Yes, it’s true.

It’s so funny I was talking with a fellow fan the other day, and she was like, “Is it just me, or do all the latest IR books tend to focus on the BWWM pairing?” I couldn’t hit my reply button fast enough! My answer in short, “Nope.” I never really gave it much thought, but I definitely noticed it. Writers have preferences or a certain comfort level (as far as not having to do a lot of research about cultures and such) or simply  a need to give the readers what they think they want, but there are sooooo many good IR books out here that are not BWWM and still SLAY!

In the coming weeks, I’ll be doing a series of features to showcase some of my favorite non-BWWM pairings. I’ll actually dedicate a post to each non-BWWM pairing to include:

  • BWHM (Black woman, Hispanic man)
  • BWAM (Black woman, Asian man)
  • BWNM (Black woman, Native man)
  • BW/Other (not considered Hispanic, Asian, or Native)

I hope these posts will broaden your reading horizons if you currently only  read BWWM IR (or if you’re just looking for something fresh) and introduce you to some different perspectives. I’m so excited to do this! Special shout out to author M.L. Spann and fellow reader Yasmine D for the inspiration!

Private Affairs: A Review

Private AffairsPrivate Affairs by Jasmine Garner

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is my first read by author Jasmine Garner (I actually own a couple of her other books that I haven’t read yet), and this story got me all up in arms! This is one of those stories that starts off innocently enough, but soon takes a spiral. I’m not saying downward, but more like sideways. This story has more twists than a honey BBQ Frito!

fit-throwing.gif.pagespeed.ce.z-NBtQDqa2

So, the story begins with BFFs Kevin and Keisha attending a wedding where Keisha is a last-minute bridesmaid fill in for some chick who had to drop out, and who but her cheating ex-fiance is her partnered groomsmen. Keisha and Wes broke up some years ago because she caught him red-handed cheating, but to this day, he maintains his innocence. As the reader, you don’t know what or who to believe because Keisha dipped when she caught him, and when I say dipped, ol’ girl practically disappeared without a trace. Seeing Wes again brings up a bunch of bittersweet memories, but apparently more sweet than bitter because they screw like rabbits-even though Keisha is dead set against having anything more to do with him. Yeah ok girl, I see you…And all the weeping and tear-shedding was just grating on my hardened nerves.

10615577_10152830101833945_3174494370191908592_n
Now, initially, this story had me hella pissed because I thought Keisha was the dumbest damn broad ever. She’s so distraught and heartbroken over Wes’s betrayal, yet she kept letting him lay the pipe whenever he touched her. Had me like:

10636042_890641477614252_6213384520152258673_n

Keisha literally left her life when she found out he was cheating and then tried to get over him by hooking up with all these randoms she met through online dating sites (Steven was a freaking nutjob…). But once Wes was back in the picture, Keisha’s lust got the better of her, then magically, everything was not so bad after all…hmmm…

IMG_314662753880336
I was really ready to write Keisha and this story off because I didn’t think she had the sense of a gnat, but then things started to take an interesting turn, and this is where I will stop because I don’t want to give away the rest of the story. I will just say everyone and everything is not what they seem. Your heart will soon race, and you won’t be able to swipe your Kindle fast enough to find out what the hell happens next. I found the first half of the book really frustrating, but the remaining half…oooh wee-through me for a roller coaster loop! Click it up!

Follow These Blogs!

Fotor0714213335

There’s hashtag trending on Twitter called #WeNeedDiverseBooks. Well, there should also be a hashtag called #WeNeedDiverseBloggers because I can count on both hands the number of blogs there are that are run by women of color that blog about, feature, and review books written by black and other authors of color (although not necessarily exclusively). So, if you’re truly serious about diversity in romance, I’ve created a follow train. These are all good blogs with something to offer for everyone, and they deserve a shout out, but more importantly, they deserve  a follow. I’m referring specifically to “blogger” blogs and not author blogs (although I got love for y’all too). If I missed anyone, please leave them in the comments.

I know there are more, so please link in the comments!

Monday Musings: Amazon On Some Bullshit…Again

Capture

So apparently if you are an author or maybe even a blogger or editor or publisher, or a person who can read and write, and Amazon determines that you “know” the author of the book you’ve reviewed, they can and will remove it. If this ain’t the biggest, steamiest pile of bullshit I’ve ever read…Amazon can eat a fat one…There’s a petition if you care about indie authors…

Series Spotlight: Breathless (In Love With An Alpha Billionaire)

FotorCreated

True to my word, I am spreading my wings (Troop literally sings in the background). I met this sweet author, Shani Greene-Dowdell on Twitter as mutual followers. She wrote a series (see title) featuring a mash-up of something I really love and something I really well… (no shade on this nice lady): alphas and billionaires. Sometimes my blinders are on so tightly that I don’t even discover authors who are out here writing books and getting hella positive reviews. So without further ado, I present the Breathless series:

1Blurb:

Walking out of a coffee shop, minding her own business, Destiny never intends to crash into real estate tycoon, Jacob Turner. A chance meeting leads to sweaty sheets, sleepless nights, and a passion she never knew existed. The curve of his lips, the warmth of his breath, his take-charge demeanor; Jacob is proof that charm and chivalry is alive and well.

Jacob had it all… except her. Due to strongholds from his past, he’s not ready to let her own him completely. When Destiny pops up in his city, their love affair is challenged by someone who could never take Destiny’s place. Getting Destiny to understand that she’s the only one he loves proves to be a quest that the billionaire has the means and heart to take.

2Blurb:

Jacob is furious that his ex-girlfriend, Justine, has turned both his business and personal life upside down. He wants more than anything to be by Destiny’s side to rebuild what Justine tore down, but Destiny’s mother is hell bent on keeping the billionaire at a distance. With Destiny’s mother not allowing him to see her in the hospital, Jacob throws himself into fixing a financial disaster at work. Meanwhile, Destiny’s ex-husband, Montie Brown, is working overtime to reclaim the woman he never stopped loving.

3Blurb:

In the finale, the Turner and Baker women are at odds over the men who’ve captured their hearts. Clara Baker has reasons near and dear to her for being so hell bent on keeping her daughter, Destiny Baker, away from Jacob Turner. Reason #1, Jacob’s father, John Turner left her high and dry with the burden of their love to bear over four decades ago. Clara puts forward a tough exterior, but the dormant pain she’s kept a secret for forty years is eating away at her soul. When she lays eyes on Jacob’s father, fireworks spark in the least expected way.

With John’s wife, Tammy Turner, cocked and ready to do whatever it takes to keep her husband, both Destiny and Clara are in for their fair share of heart wrenching drama. Meanwhile, John is prepared to do whatever it takes to make things right with Clara. Through it all, Jacob and Destiny are left to navigate the waters that were muddied by their parent’s choices well before their time. To complicate matters, Justine still hasn’t given up on a second chance with Jacob.

Will Jacob and Destiny’s love be enough to make it to the altar or will their parents and Justine’s shenanigans finally sever their bond beyond repair?

***

Make sure you check these out! After reading that last blurb, I’m personally gonna check this series out. I wanna know all about moms and pops and their doomed swirlmance…
