Monday Musings: Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!

Yes, I’m going there because you can’t discover something that already exists with thriving, self-sufficient inhabitants.

In honor of today, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite BW/NM (black woman/Native man pairings). I think this is a highly slept on coupling, and I hope you add these books to your TBR and read something new today! Let’s go!

red sun

  • Red Sun by Raven St. Pierre: This was my very first read by this author, and it involves two brothers in love with the same girl (dum, da, dum, dum, duuuummmm…) This is a young adult story, but they have more sense than many of the adult triangles I’ve read. Solei meets one brother first but is instantly attracted to his brother. Whom will she choose? Jolon or Elan? I know who I’d choose…

  • Leoti by Sienna Mynx: I don’t think I’ve read a sweeter love story than this one. This is one of my favorite Mynx stand alones, and one of the most slept on (and I suspect because it is BW/NM). This is a story about love, and lost, and self-discovery. Leoti is the quiet, brooding type, but damn, just look at the cover!

  • Heels of Love/The Enclave of Jyme by Phoenix Rayne: These are actually two separate books told from alternative perspectives, and I loved them both! Well, maybe I loved The Enclave of Jyme a little more cause it was way more insightful. It’s so funny how you read a story, but then when you’re presented with the opposing perspective, you get the full picture and everything you thought you knew or understood totally changes. Cricket Hooper moves to Seattle for a fresh start where she meets Jyme Samson-the ultimate alpha male. Jyme lives on the reservation with his family and is such an anomaly in Heels of Love. But when you read The Enclave of Jyme, everything finally makes sense. He’s sexy as hell too. Jason Momoa (he is part Native and Hawaiian among other things) was in my head the entire time.

  • Thunder In Her Body by C. Stanton: I have admittedly not read this one, but it’s been in my TBR for a minute. This is the story of Blaze Snow Comes Down (Awesome name!), a full-blooded Apache and a mixed race African-American woman (that sounds weird) who meet by chance and embark in a passionate, borderline obsessive relationship. Chile…she had me at full-blooded Apache named Blaze Snow Comes Down!

  • Better by Adrienne Thompson: Another book in my TBR…Billed as a follow up to the bestselling Your Love Is King (great book btw, and it’s BWWM), this story focuses on Carla (the BFF from YLIK). After she catches her cheating husband (mad drama) for the umpteenth time, Carla has had enough and dips for good. Starting over is never easy when you’re in a long-term relationship, but this one sounds like How Carla Got Her Groove Back with the help of one fine Cherokee named Michael. Yeah, bumping this one up too…

So here are 6 books to add to your arsenal if you haven’t already. When I read about BW and men of other ethnicities, the cultural differences fascinate just as much as the actual romance. If you know of any other BW/NM stories, please let us know in the comments. I’m always looking for something new to read.

Here are a few more! Thanks for all the recs. Keep em coming!

Have You Met Bash and Nina?

Lolah Lace is the truth y’all! She has a very unique writing style where you know you’re reading a story, but you feel like you know the chick on a personal level. Well, at least for me, anyway. The dialogue is always hilarious, and it’s stuff I would actually say.

Remember that vlog review I did some time back on The Truth Behind The Lies? Well, book 2 is dropping later this month, and I cannot wait!

The Truth Behind The Lies is a whirlwind romantic tale filled with lots of hot nookie sessions, madcap hilarity, real talk about racial and cultural differences (Yay. Can we stop pretending they don’t exist already?), and a major mystery.

Are these covers not hot? I love the contrast between the two, and it’s also very telling who the focus of the story is about no? You still have time to scoop book 1 before book 2 drops, and be on the lookout on my Facebook page for a special giveaway in celebration of its release!

Edit: There is now a book trailer! I am so looking forward to this book!

A prescription for sweet satisfaction…

Pediatrician Macy Carter has been so busy expanding her practice she’s had no time to build the family she craves. Her late, much-loved surrogate father apparently had some matchmaking in mind when he arranged for a sexy architect to take over his home and company. Too bad Derek is a single dad who’s been there, done that, and intends to remain unattached. Their priorities are totally out of sync. Their chemistry? Unbelievably potent.

Thanks to his former mentor, Derek Logan just inherited an architectural business, a house and the gorgeous client next door. He’s keeping away from forever relationships, but this doctor’s sensual touch is addictive. Helping Macy build her dream medical complex awakens Derek to how much more he now wants out of life. But has he hesitated too long to prove he’s ready for and deserving of her love?

Excerpts (Select One)

Excerpt 1

“What?” Macy finally found her voice. Derek was sending so many mixed signals she didn’t know what to think.

“I’m leaving for Miami Sunday morning for a meeting. We have a huge project starting there soon and I need to go over some logistics before we start.” He leaned against her kitchen counter and faced her. “I’m taking the company’s jet and there is more than enough room for you. Come with me. We’ll do a little sightseeing Sunday after we land, and then we can have a nice romantic dinner Sunday night. And before you say you have to work, I already know you’re off Monday and Tuesday.”

Macy didn’t know what to say about the unexpected offer. She wanted to say yes, but she wasn’t looking for an affair. She was ready to settle down. Settling for a sexual partner, even with someone like Derek, wasn’t enough.

“I can’t.”

He approached her and wrapped his strong arms around her waist, the scent of his cologne making her weak in the knees.

“Why not?” His voice had dropped an octave and desire glistened in his intense brown eyes. The man was wreaking havoc on her body and probably had no idea just how he affected her.

“I want more than an affair, Derek.” Her hands rested on his solid chest as she fingered the collar of the T-shirt he had hastily slipped into. “I deserve more than just an affair.”

He dropped his forehead to hers and blew out a frustrated breath. “I know you do, baby, but right now—” he lifted his head “—this is all I can give you.”

She pulled out of his arms. “Then whatever this is between us can’t happen.”

Excerpt 2

Derek stepped out of the shadows just as she crossed the invisible property line, giving him a better view. Desire traveled through his body as she moved closer and he got a better look at her appearance. Her hair, curled at the ends, covered part of her face as she monitored each step she took. Normally, she sported a ponytail, but he loved seeing her hair hanging loose around her shoulders. The sheer blouse covered a camisole, and that damn skirt that had him salivating earlier was shorter than he’d originally thought.

His traitorous body reacted immediately when his gaze finally landed on her toned thighs and killer legs.

“What the hell were you doing with that guy?” The words flew out of his mouth before he could stop them.

Macy stopped short. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

She gripped her clutch purse tighter. “Are you drunk?” She studied him with concern.

“No. I’m not drunk.” He rubbed a hand across his forehead and released a noisy breath. He stood only inches away, his hands itching to touch her. “How are you just going to go on a date? What about us?”

“What?” She narrowed her eyes and stared at him as if he had lost his mind. “There is no us. Besides, the last time I checked, I was a grown woman who could go out with whomever I want.” She huffed, pushing hair away from her face. “You know what? Coming over here was a bad idea. I’m going home.” She turned to leave.

“Don’t.” He reached for her hand and she stopped. He knew he wasn’t thinking straight, but at the moment he didn’t care. He was tired of denying his feelings for her, and it was time he did something about them.

Excerpt 3

“I’m not crazy,” Derek said, as if reading her mind. “I just…”

He pulled her to his body and she swallowed hard at their closeness. His familiar scent washed over her like a loving caress, her self-control weakening. She might have thought about him all evening, but her thoughts hadn’t taken this route. Never had he regarded her with such desire swimming in his eyes. His gaze held hers but quickly moved to her lips. It was as if he was contemplating his next move. He lowered his mouth closer to hers, but then he pulled back slightly. She wanted to scream, Kiss me already, but instead she waited.

His large hands cupped the sides of her face and he mumbled something she couldn’t understand. Before she could speak, he captured her lips in a searing kiss. Her thoughts jumbled inside her head. She didn’t know what had gotten into him, but whatever it was, she was all in. He kissed her with an eagerness that left no doubt they wanted the same thing. At the moment, she didn’t care that he wasn’t looking for anything long-term. All she knew was that she needed him, desired him right then and there.

Monday Musing: Am I Not A Woman?

So…Where do I even begin?? This week’s musing is inspired by this review

of this book:

This “review” angers me on multiple levels:

  1.  …this review is a warning to others like me who just can’t identify with the bw perspective
    • Translation: I’m a close-minded bigot who really doesn’t care about anyone but me (and the ww perspective because I checked out the books you’ve actually claimed to have read and reviewed), so I’m warning my fellow bigots not to even bother cause, ya know, we’re just too stupid to open our minds to new experiences.
  2. …At least this one mentions it before you buy it…Damn gotta return it…
    • Translation: I’m a lying-ass heffa cause I didn’t read or buy the book. I just saw another really interesting-sounding book that I actually considered buying, but when my racist ass saw that it was a BWWM romance that the author admittedly disclosed in the synopsis, I lost my shit, because black women out here stunting, and I’m just a salty-ass hater.
  3. I personally as a Hispanic woman cannot relate to the black woman
    • Translation: Even though I am a fellow woman of color (which I have serious doubts about) living in the United States of America-a country that is both historically and presently oppressive against people of color (Do you even watch the news or read a paper?), I have no desire to read about other women of color black women because they can’t possibly experience the same things that I do. I mean, they’re….black.

You wanna know what the sad part about all of this is? Joann is not alone in her thinking. There are a lot more Joann’s out there who refuse to read romance featuring a woman of color, more specifically, a black woman, simply because she is black. And the number one reason? They cannot “relate”.  I guess if you consider being equally or more qualified yet making less money than your white, male counterparts, having monthly periods, trying to find the perfect dress for that special occasion, taking twenty selfies til you get the right one, and losing one of your favorite earrings not being able to relate, then yeah, I guess you shouldn’t read BW romance. So in parting, get ready. Wait for it…

Book Review: Cree by LaShawn Vasser

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am a huge LaShawn Vasser fan, and what I love most about her is her range. Each new book is like a box of chocolates-you never know what you’re gonna get! Truthfully, she had me at the cover, and while this is a fictional account of one woman’s journey to self-discovery, it is also a precautionary tale of how not to get so absorbed in a man (husband or not), that you lose your complete sense of self.

Cree Jacobs is a southern gal through and through. She’s married to Cameron, a handsome blonde-haired, blue-eyed med student who’s in school hundreds of miles away in New York. Meanwhile Cree works multiple jobs back home to not only maintain a living where she is, but to also help support Cameron and his dream of becoming a medical doctor. Not only are these two dealing with a long-distance marriage, but they have become virtual strangers as a result of the separation. While Cameron is discovering new things and getting closer to becoming the doctor he’s always dreamed of being, Cree is stagnant and somewhat complacent. She merely exists and depends on the love of her husband for her happiness.

When Cameron accepts a residency at a New York hospital, Cree makes the ultimate sacrifice and uproots her life to be with her husband. Cameron has always made the decisions, often without discussing it with Cree first, and she goes along, cause you know, that’s her man, and that’s what good wives do (Chile, please.) Cree quickly learns that she doesn’t know Cameron at all. His friends aren’t overly welcoming (one female conspirator in particular) and he’s become this urban hipster who’s the antithesis of whom she fell in love with. And to top it all off, Cree is stuck in a rut-no goals and no plans to enrich her own life. That is, until an unthinkable tragedy strikes…

This was such a well-written, engrossing read. I don’t read stories like this very often where we’re introduced to an already-married couple who goes through trials and actually manage to work them out. This isn’t a story about a woman who was dogged out by her man then was rescued by another man. This is a story about a woman who was able to get through the fire because she was determined to in spite of all the obstacles. Excellent story. Click it up!
