Military Reads In Honor of Veterans Day

I know military stories are huge in the IR genre. In my reading experience, the soldiers are either alpha to the max or broken and wounded (physically and/or mentally or emotionally or a crazy combination of the two.)

Now are know there are dozens of military-themed romances out there, but here are a few that stood out to me and are worth a read. Some are heavy. Some are lighthearted. But the one thing they have in common is the HEA (happily ever after). Muy importante! And don’t forget to comment with some of your favorite military-themed faves. And if you know any AA military stories, please let me know! I don’t think I’ve come across one yet.

Special Forces by Erosa Knowles

Special Forces will always have a special place in my heart. Not only was it one of my first military romances, it was one of my first IR reads. Basically, this chick Lynay is down and out and she also has a sickly son who needs medical attention but she’s broke and uninsured. Her BFF proposes that she enters into a marriage of convenience with her marine brother so she’ll have a roof and some benefits. Tyson reluctantly agrees to this marriage, but he has his own baggage. He has a crazy-ass ex-wife who ain’t tryna hear that he’s moved on, and he’s a one true alpha-yeah, I’ll agree to this marriage, but you better remain faithful to me in every way…Yes, I was hooked. Check it out!

The Soldier & The Writer by Jamallah Bergman

I stumbled across this short, lil number on my daily troll for new reads. This is a very sweet quickie, and I love those now that I don’t have a lot of time to read anymore. The Soldier & The Writer is about a romance writer who becomes pen pals with a soldier, and guess what? They catch feelings through their letters. No fuss. No drama. Just a cute lil romance. Check it out!

The Havoc Series by Xavier Neal

Ok, this one is kinda on the heavy side and is a 3-part series in one, convenient box set. Clint literally finds Haven passed out on his front lawn and shit gets thick and thicker from there. He’s struggling with abandonment issues due to his mother’s death and his father’s lack of fucks for his own reasons. When he finds Haven, she’s battered and bruised and on the run. Can these two make it work when they both got issues on a hunnit trillion? Definitely worth the read.

Temporary Home by Aliyah Burke

Sam is a marine who rushes to the aid of his mentor/father figure when he takes ill. He meets a fellow marine named Roxi, and they’re both immediately attracted to one another (You know how that goes…) Sam is the quiet, brooding type, and Roxi is raising her nephew while keeping Sam at arm’s length. If you love stories of personal growth, soul-searching, and transformation, then this is definitely worth checking out.

The Grunt by Latrivia S. Nelson

This was the first story I ever read by IR romance vet Latrivia S. Nelson, and it’s in my romance hall of fame. Although this book is part of her Lonely Hearts series, each book is a stand alone, so there are no cliffhangers. So, on to the story…We have another marine here (They’re very popular in military romances) named Brett who is raising his toddler son alone after his wife dies (You must read this book to find out how she dies. Chile…). Of course he don’t know jack about how to raise his own son, so he enlists the aid of a nanny, a pretty, young student named Courtney. What I loved about this story is there wasn’t this instant “ka-boom” let’s hook up, but it was a gradual process with a lot of mess in between. We witness Brett being a hands-on father trying to raise his son. He acknowledges that Courtney is fine and yeah, he’d hit it, but he fights it with everything in him. Courtney is just trying to find her way since her strict marine father has no faith in her whatsoever. I understand that there’s going to be a book 2 dropping sometime next year. I will definitely be clicking it.

So, here are five of my current faves. What are some of y’alls favorite military reads?
