Women’s History Month: Do You Know Shirley Chisholm?

Before Geraldine Ferraro. Before Jesse Jackson. Before Hilary Clinton. Before Barack Obama. And wayyyy before Sarah Palin, there was the first. The Blueprint. The Bawse. Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm!

Shirley Chisholm was the first black woman elected to Congress, and not only was she the first woman, but the first black person to run for President of these United States. She was a B.A.M. Just look at her slogan!

I could give you the Wikepedia version of who she was, but you can look that up yourself. Instead, I would like to share some quotes of Ms. Chisholm’s because she was an innovator, an educator, a motivator, and a feminist.

I encourage you to read more about this great American leader, and next week I’ll be back with a literary icon some of you may have heard of but not really know about.

  1. LOVE this post! My parents worked on her local campaign, which in those days meant the WHOLE family worked! LOL! Stuffed more than a few envelopes as a 12-year-old.
